BOX OFFICE REPORT (MARCH 1-3): 'Jack the Giant Slayer' Fails to Bring in Monster Box Office Results
I won't subject you to any horrible puns about Jack the Giant Slayer being a "giant" flop or getting "slayed" at the box office. You don't need any puns to understand that Warner Bros.'s hopes at launching a new franchise with Jack the Giant Slayer were shattered after the film only mustered up $28.01 million its first weekend. For comparison, John Carter, the new benchmark for a flop, opened to $30.18 million last March. Warner Bros. poured a ton of marketing dollars into promoting Bryan Singer's film, but audiences didn't bite.
On a positive note, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, becoming only the fifteenth film to do so and the second The Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit film to reach the milestone.
1. Jack the Giant Slayer (N)
$28.01 million ($28.01 million)
I don't think Jack the Giant Slayer knew what kind of movie it wanted to be, rocking a PG-13 rating but never really showing an edge and getting delayed for additional tinkering. The movie comes across as a poor cut of a better movie, with characters referencing things that happened off screen between scenes. Singer hasn't had a hit in a long time — hopefully he can break that streak with X-Men: Days of Future Past.
2. Identity Thief (1)
$9.71 million ($107.43 million)
Identity Thief keeps rolling along, staying in the top five for the fourth straight week while passing the $100 million mark at the same time. It's no surprise that sequel talk has begun.
3. 21 and Over (N)
3. 21 and Over (N)
$9.00 million ($9.00 million)
My guess at how many people saw 21 and Over? 21 or under.

4. The Last Exorcism Part II (N)
$8.03 million ($8.03 million)
The Last Exorcism opened to $20.37 million in 2010, a feat that this sequel couldn't even come close to matching.

5. Snitch (2)
$7.00 million ($24.41 million)
Someone had to be No. 5 this weekend.
Next week's predictions:
1. Oz: The Great and Powerful
2. Jack the Giant Slayer
3. Identity Thief
4. Dead Man Down
5. 21 and Over
