BOX OFFICE REPORT (MARCH 29-31): 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Storms the Easter Weekend Box Office, While 'The Host' Flops

The Easter movie weekend proved two things. One, Dwayne Johnson's magic touch can breathe new life into any franchise, with the actor's addition to the G.I. Joe series resulting in an international blockbuster. Maybe JJ Abrams should seriously consider Johnson's desire to be in Star Wars: Episode VII.

And two, it looks like Stephenie Meyer wasn't what was drawing all those tweens to movie theaters — it was just a boring girl-vampire-werewolf love triangle that was selling tickets. The Host was supposed to be Meyer's new megafranchise, but the movie failed to even crack the top five, making just $11 million and coming in at No. 6.

1. G.I. Joe: Retaliation (N)
$41.2 million ($51.71 million)
While G.I. Joe: Retaliation opened to less than its predecessor did in 2009 (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra debuted to $54.71 million), Retaliation still had the second best Easter weekend ever and brought in approximately $80 million at the global box office. Paramount has already greenlit a sequel.

2. The Croods (1)
$26.50 million ($88.62 million)
I just don't get the appeal of The Croods. The story doesn't look original. The jokes seem like the traditional topical humor that DreamWorks Animation is known for. The only positive review I've read came from Ain't It Cool News' Harry Knowles, but he's the guy who hated Inception, so I'll let you determine how much value that review carries.

3. Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (1)
$22.30 million ($22.30 million)
The Tyler Perry movies are still making money, but they're not making as much as they used to. Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor had the seventh best opening for a Tyler Perry movie, trailing way behind the $41.03 million Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail opened to in 2009.

4. Olympus Has Fallen (2)
$14.00 million ($54.74 million)
Not a bad second weekend for Olympus Has Fallen. It'll be interesting to see how White House Down compares in a few months.

5. Oz the Great and Powerful (3)
$11.61 million ($198.78 million)
Oz the Great and Powerful will probably break $200 million on Monday. I still love the fact that James Franco can currently be seen in this and Spring Breakers at the same time. If you're looking to have your mind blown, go plan an Oz the Great and Powerful/Spring Breakers double feature.

Next week's predictions:
1. G.I. Joe: Retaliation
2. Evil Dead
3. The Croods
4. Jurassic Park 3D
5. Olympus Has Fallen
