BOX OFFICE REPORT (MAY 31-JUNE 2): Will Smith's 'After Earth' Bombs, 'Now You See Me' Surprises, 'Fast and Furious 6' Still No. 1

Just days ago, we were living in a world where Will Smith was a box office megastar, reeling off hit after hit with movies like the Men in Black franchise, Independence Day and I Am Legend. Today, though, we're in a very different cinematic world — the world where Smith films have to settle for third place their opening weekends, usurped by movies about cars and magicians. After Earth, Smith's latest project starring himself and his son, Jaden Smith, bombed at the box office, earning almost universally negative reviews on the way to just $27 million. After Earth's opening weekend couldn't even top Wild Wild West's, which is generally considered the biggest bomb of Smith's career.

Beyond the top five, Iron Man 3 added another $8 million to its domestic total, sliding up to the No. 17 spot on the all-time domestic list. With its total domestic gross at $384.75, does Iron Man 3 have the juice left to cross the $400 million mark?

1. Fast and Furious 6 (1)
$34.54 million ($170.38 million)
Thanks to After Earth's failure, Fast and Furious 6 was able to hold onto the No. 1 spot at the box office, topping Fast Five's second-weekend total of $32.45. Fast and Furious 6's total domestic gross is now less than $40 million away from topping Fast Five's. With the awful-looking The Internship being next week's big opening, it looks like Fast and Furious 6 should be able to hold on to the top spot for a third weekend. Man of Steel will end that streak the following week, though.

2. Now You See Me (N)

$28.05 million ($28.05 million)

Congrats, Jesse Eisenberg, you've now defeated Will Smith is box office combat. Now You See Me surprised a lot of box office analysts with its strong debut. The film benefited from an intriguing advertising campaign that kept most of its secrets, well, secret and strong word of mouth from moviegoers.

3. After Earth (N)

$27.00 million ($27.00 million)
So what happened with After Earth? I have a two-prong theory on this. Prong one: Despite everyone's massive efforts to hide the fact that M. Night Shyamalan directed After Earth, M. Night Shyamalan directed After Earth. The former director prodigy has long lost his magic, delivering duds like The Last Airbender and The Happening. Whatever magic he once had was used up on Unbreakable and The Sixth Sense. Prong two: Jaden Smith is not a movie star. He's a kid who has a rich dad who buys him movie projects to star in. No one — NO ONE — is like, "Holy crap! A new Jaden Smith movie? Where's my tent? I need to start camping out for this one NOW." Will Smith allowed his name and his reputation as a box office king to be sullied by Shyamalan and Jaden Smith. How do you tell your own son he's toxic to your career?

T4. Star Trek Into Darkness (3)

$16.40 million ($181.16 million)
With its $16.4 million weekend haul, Star Trek Into Darkness treks past The Croods to become the third highest grossing film of 2013. While the JJ Abrams film probably still has some life in it, it has a long way to go before it could catch No. 2 Oz the Great and Powerful at $233 million.
