With Marcia Wallace's Death, 'The Simpsons' Will Retire Edna Krabappel

Bart Simpson won't have Edna Krabappel to harass anymore. With the death of Marcia Wallace, who voiced the character since her inception on The Simpsons in 1990, the character will be retired, according to Al Jean, one of the show's executive producers.

"I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace," Jean said in a statement. "She was beloved by all at The Simpsons and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character."

Jean did clarify that Edna Krabappel won't be the major character he had teased The Simpsons would kill off during its 25th season, saying "Marcia's passing is unrelated and again, a terrible loss for all who had the pleasure of knowing her."

Wallace passed away at the age of 70 on Friday after a lengthy battle with breast cancer.

This isn't the first time The Simpsons have retired a character due to the death of the actor who voiced it. After Phil Harman's death in 1998, the show retired the popular Troy McClure.
