BOX OFFICE REPORT (DEC. 27-29): 'Frozen' Almost Dethrones 'The Hobbit' Sequel

1. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (1st)
Weekend gross: $29.9 million / Total domestic gross: $190.3 million /
Percent drop: 5.3
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug won its third weekend in a row, holding off a fierce challenge from Frozen. Yes, the second movie in The Hobbit franchise was almost dethroned by a film in that film's fifth weekend. I'm not certain, but I think this weekend's close call for The Desolation of Smaug can be attributed to the crazy strength of Frozen, not Smaug's weaknesses. While the Hobbit sequel turned in the worst second weekend of any movie in the Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit franchise last weekend, the film rode Christmas weekend to the second best third weekend of the franchise.

2. Frozen (3rd)
Weekend gross: $28.8 million / Total domestic gross: $248.4 million /
Percent increase: 46.9
Frozen has now not only grossed more at the domestic box office than any other movie under the Second Disney Renaissance, but the film now trails only The Lion King among all movies produced by Walt Disney Disney Animation Studios. How crazy is that? Frozen won't catch The Lion King's $422.8 million, but it could still cross $300 million.

3. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2nd)
Weekend gross: $20.2 million / Total domestic gross: $83.7 million /
Percent drop: 24.7
Thanks to Christmas weekend, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues notched a stronger second weekend than Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, grossing $20.2 million compared to the original's $13.8 million. Overall, the Anchorman sequel is now less than $2 million from outgrossing its predecessor's lifetime domestic gross.

4. American Hustle (4th)
Weekend gross: $19.6 million / Total domestic gross: $60 million /
Percent increase: 2.3
American Hustle remained strong at the box office, turning in almost an exact performance to its previous weekend. David O. Russell's Oscar contended fended off every new release, whether it was Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street or Justin Bieber in Believe. (Then again, pretty much everyone trumped Bieber this weekend. His film flopped.)

5. The Wolf of Wall Street (NR)
Weekend gross: $18.5 million / Total domestic gross: $34.3 million /
Percent drop: NA
When it comes to DiCaprio/Martin Scorsese movies, The Wolf of Wall Street had a mediocre opening weekend. Its $18.5 million beat Gangs of New York's $9.5 million and The Aviator's $8.6 million, but trailed The Departed's $26.9 million and Shutter Island's $41.1 million. Yes, somehow Shutter Island had the best opening weekend of any DiCaprio/Scorsese film.

Next week's predictions
1. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
2. Frozen
3. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
4. American Hustle
5. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues
