LA Film Critics Name 'Gravity' and 'Her' as 2013's Best Films, Honor James Franco's 'Spring Breakers' Performance

I've seen 67 films in theaters during 2013, and I don't think I saw a more bizarre performance than James Franco in Spring Breakers. Franco's done a lot of weird stuff over the past few years, but disappearing into the role of Alien, the trashy gangster who boasts about his collection of shorts, garnered considerable buzz when the movie, might actually lead to a busy awards season.

On Sunday, the LA Film Critics Association announced its honorees for 2013, announcing that Franco had tied with Dallas Buyers Club's Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor. With Leto entering awards season as the favorite for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, Franco's LA Film Critics (half) victory might be a big deal.

The LA Film Critics Association also named Gravity and Her as its Best Pictures. While Her isn't in wide release yet, Spike Jonze's film is quickly becoming a stealth Best Picture contender.
