'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Trailer Pits Spider-Man Against Electro, the Green Goblin and Rhino

The first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hit the Internet on Thursday morning, giving us our first real look at the upcoming movie. In the sequel, Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man faces a host of villains, including Jamie Foxx as Electro, Dane DeHaan as the Green Goblin and Paul Giamatti as the Rhino, all while trying to unlock the secrets of his past.

As someone who loved 2011's The Amazing Spider-Man, I like what I'm seeing in this trailer. I've accepted the fact that director Marc Webb is building a deeper mystery to Peter Parker's background, even if that was never really in the comics. (Unless you count the Spider totem storyline from the early 2000s.)

Are there too many villains? Too early to tell. For all we know, the Rhino could be in the movie's opening scene. Spider-Man defeats him, he gets locked up ... maybe saved for the Sinister Six in a later movie? The new trailer did show us the Vulture's wings and Doctor Octopus' arms, so Sony is definitely building to a Sinister Six storyline.

It's also cool to see shots filmed in Rochester, N.Y., the hometown of myself and many of Popculturology's writers, featured in the car chase scenes that made the trailer.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters on May 2, 2014.
