What Role Does Hillary Clinton Play in the Conclusion of the 'HIMYM' Slap Bet?

Of its many contributions to pop culture, How I Met Your Mother's biggest gift may be the slap bet. Introduced during show's second season, the slap bet is an agreement between friends that allows one friend to slap the other a certain number of times as the prize for winning a bet. There's often a (supposedly) impartial party who acts as slap bet commissioner to rule on any disagreements or future changes.

Since HIMYM first introduced the slap bet in the Season 2 episode Slap Bet, the show has slowly revealed how Jason Segel's Marshall wound up using up his original five slaps (plus three bonus slaps) on Neil Patrick Harris' Barney. So far, we've seen six slaps, with the most recent two coming in the Season 7 episode Disaster Averted.

With an upcoming episode of HIMYM titled Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment in Slapmarra, it's likely that we're going to see another slap soon. There's no way the show ends without Marshall delivering all eight slaps to Barney, right? On Tuesday, TVLine revealed that, yes, we'll see a slap in Slapsgiving 3.

Jason Segel offered up this cryptic tease: “I’ll just say two words, and you can take them any way you want: Hillary. Clinton.”

Hillary Clinton? Segel has long made Clinton the punchline of his jokes, even going so far as to say that she was the show's infamous Mother and expressing hope that she could appear in a movie of his. Clinton rejected that offer. I'm guessing that Segel just threw her name out there again when asked about HIMYM and the slap bet.

Slapsgiving 3: Slappoinment in Slapmarra is set to air on Jan. 20, 2014.
