A Seth Pohorence Pop-Ed: Fighting Writer's Block With ALF and Bob Newhart

This week I am suffering from writer’s block. Well, a pop culture writer’s block. I could write another column about sports, but I’m fairly certain you guys are sick of reading that. I wanted to write something on the Oscars, but I didn’t see a single film in theaters this year, so there goes that idea. Television sucks right now, so I got nothing there. So now all I can do is think of random thoughts.

I guess NBC only gives someone a show on the guidelines that they were: 1) A star on a previous NBC hit and 2) a star on an NBC show that is no longer relevant in popular culture. Who else is going to get a show — Justine Bateman? Bill Cosby? ALF?

I loved the idea that ALF was a popular show on NBC. Being the proud owner of the series, the show really hit its peak midway through season one when they had Bill Dailey guest appear as a psychologist, which was a homage to Dailey playing Bob Hartley’s neighbor on The Bob Newhart Show. The Bob Newhart Show was really funny. Peter Bonerz, who was just on Parks and Recreation, was funny on that show as Jerry Robinson. Marcia Wallace was brilliant as well. However, Newhart, the show about the inn was really stupid …
