A Seth Pohorence Pop-Ed: Fighting Writer's Block With ALF and Bob Newhart

This week I am suffering from writer’s block. Well, a pop culture writer’s block. I could write another column about sports, but I’m fairly certain you guys are sick of reading that. I wanted to write something on the Oscars, but I didn’t see a single film in theaters this year, so there goes that idea. Television sucks right now, so I got nothing there. So now all I can do is think of random thoughts.

I guess NBC only gives someone a show on the guidelines that they were: 1) A star on a previous NBC hit and 2) a star on an NBC show that is no longer relevant in popular culture. Who else is going to get a show — Justine Bateman? Bill Cosby? ALF?

I loved the idea that ALF was a popular show on NBC. Being the proud owner of the series, the show really hit its peak midway through season one when they had Bill Dailey guest appear as a psychologist, which was a homage to Dailey playing Bob Hartley’s neighbor on The Bob Newhart Show. After that, the show really nosed dived, especially when they have a baby …

The Bob Newhart Show was really funny. Peter Bonerz, who was just on Parks and Recreation, was funny on that show as Jerry Robinson. Marcia Wallace was brilliant as well. However, Newhart, the show about the inn was really stupid …

The show Coach used a couple of references to Newhart. In one episode, Christine Armstrong was reading a book written by Dick Loudon on how to fly fish. Dick Loudon was Bob Newhart’s character name on Newhart. Coach was funny until they moved to Orlando, picked up Katherine Helmond and they adopted a surrogate baby …

Anyone think it's weird that Mad About You was in the same universe as Seinfeld? Paul had to get rid of his bachelor pad in one episode, because I guess that’s what married men in New York City do. Anyways the person who was renting out the apartment is Cosmo Kramer. Mad About You was funny until Paul and Jamie had a baby. That really ruined the show, more so when they had that final episode …

Seinfeld had an awful series finale. I know everyone will hate me for this, but I never really liked Seinfeld. I’ve seen every episode, but I didn’t like that god damn show …

People love The Big Bang Theory. Can someone explain to me why? No, seriously, my parents think it’s funny. My girlfriend and her family think it’s funny. The nerdy tech people I play kickball with think it’s funny. I think it’s the dumbest show out there …

If you are in your twenties and live in Rochester, N.Y., chances are you played kickball …

How come there are no professional kickball leagues? You could probably play the games on softball fields, and I bet they would make great television. I could become the Vin Scully of kickball broadcasts …

Remember when they used to make clear colas? Pepsi made not only a clear cola/soda/pop/what have you, but they also made a really unsuccessful blue soda …

When was the last time Dan Aykroyd was funny? 1981?

Could you imagine Ray Romano playing the role of the electrician on NewsRadio instead of Joe Rogan?

Guys, writer’s block is awful. I’m just rambling now. Hopefully next week I will have something people will actually want to read instead of this. Until then, keep on watching the skis, I mean skies.
