BOX OFFICE REPORT (MARCH 7-9): '300: Rise of an Empire' Conquers the Weekend
Weekend gross: $45.1 million / Total domestic gross: $45.1 million /
Percent drop: NA
300: Rise of an Empire couldn't match the opening weekend gross of its predecessor ($70.9 million in March 2007), but its $45.1 million opening mark was enough to win the weekend and hopefully justify the Warner Bros. prequel/sequel/sidequel. Between 300: Rise of an Empire and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Eva Green is cementing herself as the go-to badass female lead for sequels.
2. Mr. Peabody and Sherman (N)
Weekend gross: $32.5 million / Total domestic gross: $32.5 million /
Percent drop: NA
An opening weekend gross of $32.5 million isn't bad, but was anyone really excited about Mr. Peabody and Sherman? The trailers and commercials made the movie look like just another run-of-the-mill DreamWorks Animation offerings. One commercial even had two butt jokes in it. Someone probably got a raise for that over at DreamWorks. They love that stuff.

3. Non-Stop (1st)
Weekend gross: $15.4 million / Total domestic gross: $52.1 million /
Percent drop: 46.7
In case you forgot that Non-Stop was in theaters, Liam Neeson popped up during this weekend's Saturday Night Live. I loved Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln, but I would still love to see what Neeson would've been like in that role. (He was originally cast as Abraham Lincoln, but the project's repeated delays caused the actor to drop out.) Would we get the new Taken Era Neeson?

4. The Lego Movie (3rd)
Percent drop: 47.2
The Lego Movie is currently the top-grossing movie of 2014. Sure, that record won't stand the entire year, but that's still a pretty cool honor for a movie that originally seemed to just be getting dumped during the dead February time. Hopefully The Lego Movie's February release doesn't hurt the movie's Oscar chances in 2015.
5. Son of God (2nd)
Weekend gross: $10.0 million / Total domestic gross: $41.5 million /
Percent drop: 47.7
Percent drop: 47.7
Son of God dropped from second to fifth its second weekend in theaters. I assume the plan is to keep the movie in theaters through Easter?
Next week's predictions
1. 300: Rise of an Empire
2. Need for Speed
3. Mr. Peabody and Sherman
4. Non-Stop
5. The Lego Movie
