BOX OFFICE REPORT (JULY 18-20): No One Wants to Watch Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel's 'Sex Tape'

1. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (1st)
Weekend gross: $36 million / Total domestic gross: $139 million /
Percent drop: 50.4
Once you've defeated the human race, films about purges, talking planes and sex tapes aren't much of a challenge. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes easily fended off a trio of new challengers this weekend, grossing $36 million to up its domestic gross to $139 million. Through its first two weekends, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is way ahead of its predecessor, outdoing Rise of the Planet of the Apes $139 million to $105.2 million.

Can Dawn hold on for a second weekend at No. 1? The film will be challenged by Dwayne Johnson's Hercules and Scarlett Johansson's Lucy next weekend. Hercules could probably go either way, possibly be a hit or just outright flopping.

2. The Purge: Anarchy (N)
Weekend gross: $28.4 million / Total domestic gross: $28.4 million /
Percent drop: NA
While Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is outperforming its predecessor, The Purge: Anarchy failed to live up to the previous installment of that franchise. When The Purge opened last summer, it debuted with an impressive $34.1 million. The Purge: Anarchy is still in good shape, though, considering its budget was only $9 million.

3. Planes: Fire and Rescue (NA)
Weekend gross: $18 million / Total domestic gross: $18 million /
Percent drop: NA
Continuing the weekend of sequels, we have Planes: Fire and Rescue. While the Planes movies are matching the Cars movies in quality (crappy), they don't have anywhere near the box office pull of Pixar's feature-length toy commercials. Fire and Rescue's debut of $18 million was pretty close to Planes' opening weekend of $22.2 million.

4. Sex Tape (N)
Weekend gross: $15 million / Total domestic gross: $15 million /
Percent drop: NA
The last time Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel and director Jake Kasdan teamed up, Bad Teacher opened to $31.6 million and went on to gross $100.3 million at the domestic box office. The trio wasn't quite as lucky this past weekend. Sex Tape opened at No. 4, pulling in a flaccid $15 million.

5. Transformers: Age of Extinction (2nd)
Weekend gross: $10 million / Total domestic gross: $227.2 million /
Percent drop: 38.7
Through its fourth weekend in theaters, the domestic box office has lost interest in Transformers: Age of Extinction. The latest Transformers movie trails its three predecessors through this point, dramatically lagging behind Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's $363.8 million. Don't cry for Michael Bay, though. Age of Extinction is cleaning up internationally, already racking up $886.3 million worldwide.

Next week's predictions
1. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
2. Hercules
3. The Purge: Anarchy
4. Lucy
5. Planes: Fire and Rescue
