SNL RECAP: Kristen Wiig Hijacks Show From Amy Adams; Dr. Evil Disses Kim Jong Un and Sony

Welcome to Edition No. 52 of Popculturology's Saturday Night Live recaps. All of your questions about the Amy Adams-hosted episode will soon be answered.

How'd Amy Adams do?

Amy Adams was robbed. Fans of SNL were robbed. Once again, Lorne Michaels brought back Kristen Wiig and selfishly allowed her to hijack the show, stealing the spotlight from the host and the current cast.

Remember the show Family Matters? It started out as a show about a working class family. Sure, they had a weird neighbor, but he wasn't supposed to be the star of the show. Then Steve Urkel took over, and Family Matters quickly became all about him. It didn't matter what the original premise of the show was supposed to be or how the other characters were supposed to development, all that mattered was that Steve Urkel was front and center.

Wiig left the show at the end of the 2011-12 season, but she's never been able to stay away. Despite the success of Bridesmaids, Wiig has failed to find success at the level Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have, so maybe she has a ton of free time. Maybe she knows that Lorne Michaels once killed an entire village of Tusken Raiders. There was no reason for Wiig to be on SNL this past weekend, but there she was, stealing the monologue from Adams and reteaming with Fred Armisen as "Garth and Kat" — arguably the worst recurring "Weekend Update" segment in the history of SNL — later in the show.

Wiig's value to SNL has always been overblown. Michaels allowed to her have a farewell unlike anything the show had ever seen before in 2012. For the most part, Wiig's act on SNL had gotten stale, and she probably stayed a season longer than she should have. This makes it all the more absurd that she keeps coming back. "Garth and Kat" wasn't funny three years ago and it's not funny now.

Adams was a great host, but all I can remember is the rage boiling up in my pop culture brain when I saw Wiig get carried onto stage during Adams' monologue. Bringing back Wiig was a vote of no confidence by Michaels in Adams and the current cast.

What were the best sketches of the night?

This is how you bring back a former SNL castmember. Having Mike Myers play Dr. Evil during the cold open was brilliant. Not only was it creative on the show's part, but it was the most relevant thing Myers has done in years. Like having Fey play Sarah Palin, this was a case of an actor with nothing to promote showing up to add something to SNL that the current cast couldn't provide. 

Wiig talking about Christmas in the monologue? Anyone could have done that.

I had no idea where this sketch was going, but once it got there, it was amazing. Why were these three singers, played by Adams, Cecily Strong and Kate McKinnon, so eager to have to "nyum nyum garbage"? Turns out they were raccoons who just wanted to have their Christmas wishes to "be singers and kiss on a man" come true.

Unlike everyone else on Twitter, I haven't listened to Serial yet. From what I've heard, SNL's spoof on the podcast was dead on.

SNL touched on race again this past weekend, continuing the show's recent streak of actually trying to say something.

Love "Girlfriends Talk Show." Aidy Bryant is one of SNL's best performers, but she's never better than during this sketch. What's a funnier line, "You better take your chewable vitamins along with your bitch sandwich and go ahead and sit on the sandwich as well" or "I am blasting out of my pants right now"?

How was 'Weekend Update'?

Can someone get the Associated Press to change the official style of Kim Jong Un's name to Kimberly? Watch out for those laser sniper targets.

Meh.

The only thing lazier than bringing Wiig and Armisen back for another round of "Garth and Kat" would be if SNL had just run a repeat of "Weekend Update." This was a few minutes stolen from a deserving current castmember. Wanna see Davidson or Leslie Jones on "Weekend Update"? Sorry, Lorne Michaels has a sick obsession with Wiig and Armisen instead.

How about the rest of the show?

If you're going to put this much work into a song about office Christmas parties that's stealing the vibe of The Lonely Island's "Dick in a Box" and "Jizz in My Pants," you better make good on that promise. Unfortunately, Jay Pharoah and Pete Davidson's song couldn't do that.

The bizarreness of this sketch could have possibly launched it higher in the rankings had SNL not done the raccoons sketch beforehand.
