AMERICAN SNIPER Sets Super Bowl Weekend Box Office Record (UPDATE: Nope)

American Sniper took out another box office record this past weekend, setting a new high mark for Super Bowl weekend. The movie brought in $31.9 million over its third official weekend, trumping the $31.1 million grossed by Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour over the 2008 Super Bowl weekend.

With the additional $31.9 million, American Sniper continued its impressive run at the domestic box office, bringing its total up to $248.9 million.

American Sniper has now passed Gran Torino's $148.9 million by $100 million, massively cementing the film as the highest grossing movie of Clint Eastwood's directorial career.

When it comes to movies that Bradley Cooper actually appears in (sorry, Guardians of the Galaxy), American Sniper trails only The Hangover ($277.3 million) and The Hangover: Part II ($254.5 million). With the Oscars approaching and the film's momentum not slowing down, American Sniper should wind up being Cooper's highest-grossing film (not counting Guardians of the Galaxy).

UPDATE: It turns out that American Sniper fell short of beating Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus' record. When the actual numbers came in on Monday, American Sniper had grossed only $30.6 million.
