STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan: Lando Calrissian Could Return

Thanks to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we're going to see Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia back on the big screen for the first time in decades. Some fans, though, have been disappointed to see that Lando Calrissian is missing from the upcoming Star Wars sequel.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan gave Lando fans some hope in a Vanity Fair interview published on Monday.

"Right now, there's no Lando Calrissian in this movie," Kasdan said when asked if we'll ever see Lando in another Star Wars movie. "But Lando I don't think is finished in any way, shape, or form."

Billy Dee Williams, who originated the character of Lando in 1980's The Empire Strikes Back, hasn't stayed too far away from the Star Wars universe. Williams recently voiced a younger version of the characters in the first season of Star Wars Rebels. As the Star Wars universe expands beyond the core episodic movies, there are going be a ton of opportunities for Lando to show up. Considering that — like Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher — Williams is 30 years older than he was in Return of the Jedi, we shouldn't expect to see Lando pop up in a Star Wars Anthology movie that takes place anytime before The Force Awakens.

Kasdan also shared some very positive thoughts on The Force Awakens, telling Vanity Fair that he and director JJ Abrams are working very hard to avoid allowing the much-anticipated Star Wars movie from falling into the recent trend of summer blockbusters that just don't end.

"One of the things that we always refocus on from the get-go was that it not be one of these very long, bloated blockbusters," Kasdan said. "A lot of very entertaining movies lately are too long. In the last 20 minutes, you think, why isn't this over? We didn't want to make a movie like that. I mean, we were really aiming to have it be — when it's over you'll say, 'I wish there's more.' Or, 'Wait, is it over?' Because how rarely you get that feeling nowadays, and I think we're headed there. But it means that there will be constant critical looking at it from now to the end, saying, 'Do we need this? Do we need that? Is it better if this comes out, even though we love it?' Killing your darlings."

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on Dec. 18 ... just seven months from Monday.
