AQUAMAN Finds Its Director in FURIOUS 7 Helmer James Wan

The King of the Seven Seas has found his director. Warner Bros. announced on Wednesday that Furious 7 and The Conjuring director James Wan will helm Aquaman. The movie is set to star Jason Momoa as the title character.

"We've been so lucky to have worked with James, first on New Line's The Conjuring and now on their upcoming The Conjuring 2, and are thrilled to have him on board as we continue to expand our DC slate," Warner Bros. Pictures Creative Development and Worldwide Production President Greg Silverman said in a statement. "The Aquaman film will be a major tentpole picture for us and James' span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material."

Wan's name was first connected to Aquaman in April on the heels of Furious 7's $147.1 million opening weekend. At the time it looked like the director's schedule — The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist and the possibility of Fast and Furious 8 — would keep him from being able to find the time to direct Aquaman. Looks like Wan cleared his schedule to helm the movie for Warner Bros.

"James is not only a great storyteller but can make action truly explode on the big screen, and Jason has a dynamic presence that commands your attention," Charles Roven said in a statement. "Together, they will bring an undeniable vitality and energy to this character as he headlines his first feature film."

Aquaman is scheduled to open on July 27, 2018. Momoa will first appear as Aquaman with a cameo in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
