Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan Star in First Trailer for ROCKY Spinoff CREED

The first trailer for Creed, the upcoming Rocky spinoff, debuted on Tuesday — and it's the perfect example of how you make a trailer for a spinoff movie that can stand on its own too.

It would have been really easy to just go with a ton of shots of Sylvester Stallone reprising his iconic role of Rocky for the Creed trailer. Why waste time introducing a new character when you can just remind moviegoers how much they love the ol' boxer?

Creed doesn't appear to be that kind of movie. Ryan Coogler both wrote and directed Creed, re-teaming with Michael B. Jordan, his star from the acclaimed Fruitvale Station, for the movie. Jordan is an actor on the rise, playing Johnny Storm in this summer's Fantastic Four reboot before tackling the role of Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo Creed.

In Creed, the younger Creed goes to Philadelphia to train under to tutelage of Rocky Balboa, the foe-turned-friend of his father. Earlier reports had pegged Adonis as Apollo's grandson, but the dynamic shifted at some point. Having Adonis be Apollo's son really makes his connection to Rocky much stronger.

Creed opens on Nov. 25.
