That STAR WARS Trilogy About Obi-Wan Kenobi Rumor Is Back ...
The rumor that Lucasfilm is working on a trilogy of Star Wars movies about Obi-Wan Kenobi is back. We first heard this rumor last October when there was a report that Lucasfilm was working on three movies that would focus on Obi-Wan but not necessarily be connected on a timeline. Schmoes Knows added fuel to the Kenobi fire on Tuesday, reporting that they too were hearing the same things about a trilogy.
The site reports that an Obi-Wan Kenobi trilogy would be separate from the main Star Wars episodes and the Star Wars Anthology movies. Here's the kicker: Disney is apparently in negotiations with Ewan McGregor for an unknown project. The actor was in the mix for Doctor Strange, but that role went to Benedict Cumberbatch. Could Disney have been keeping McGregor free to reprise his Star Wars role?
Alec Guinness may have originated the role of Obi-Wan in 1977's Star Wars, but McGregor has become the version of the character that many Star Wars fans see as the best version of the character. Not only was McGregor the guy who played Kenobi in the three prequel movies, but the Obi-Wan we see in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels is based on him. A trilogy of movies that would bring McGregor back as Obi-Wan would be a huge hit with fans.
Schmoes Knows reports that McGregor's return as Obi-Wan Kenobi could begin with a cameo in Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One before blossoming into a trilogy set between Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith and the original Star Wars. As we previously heard, these movies could pull characters like Darth Maul and Owen Lars back onto the big screen.
For all the flack the prequel trilogy gets and for all the energy Disney has put into moving Star Wars beyond the original trilogy, it's amazing how much these spinoff movies are focusing on the period after the prequel trilogy — which is still prequel territory. Rogue One, the possibly Han Solo/Boba Fett Anthology film and now this Obi-Wan Kenobi trilogy all take place before R2-D2 and C-3PO ever found their way to Luke Skywalker.
