Phil Lord and Chris Miller Returning to Write 'The Lego Movie' Sequel

We were originally supposed to get the sequel to The Lego Movie in May 2017, but Warner Bros.' fast-tracking of The Lego Batman Movie for that date has pushed the movie back to 2018. Despite the extra time, the studio isn't slacking on the movie, with Warner Bros. signing Phil Lord and Chris Miller to write The Lego Movie 2.

Deadline broke the news on Saturday, while reporting at the same time that there's no news whether the duo will direct The Lego Movie 2 in addition to writing it. The Lego Movie co-director Chris McKay was originally going to direct the sequel, but he's now in charge of helming The Lego Batman Movie.

It does appear that Deadline has gotten the release date for The Lego Movie 2 confused with the release date for The Lego Batman Movie. Deadline reports that the sequel is coming out May 26, 2017, which is the release date for The Lego Batman Movie. It was originally The Lego Movie 2's release date, but Warner Bros. has given that date to the Batman spinoff.

Lord and Miller were the only two guys behind the screenplay for the original Lego Movie, so seeing them coming back to write the sequel is a really good sign. I'm excited to see The Lego Batman Movie, but I'd hate to see The Lego Movie 2 get shorted.
