Isn't there an American actor worthy of Lincoln?

Entertainment Weekly currently has an item up on their blog about the possibility that Eric Bana might play Abraham Lincoln in the film adaption of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. First off, I haven't read this book. I do surprisingly own it, thanks to a book sale/charity auction at work the other day. There's a strong chance it could veer into Twilight territory, but I only paid three bucks for it. No big loss if it's bad.

It's not my goal to write about the merits of this book though. I wanted to point out something that seems to be an issue in the film world now: Moviemakers seem unable to cast an American as Abraham Lincoln. When it comes to my personal presidential rankings, no one tops Lincoln. The guy saved America. There shouldn't even be an argument here. Isn't there an American actor worthy of the role of Abraham Lincoln?

You have this Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter adaption possibly casting Eric Bana, an Australian, as the sixteenth president. Steven Spielberg's much-anticipated/frequently delayed Lincoln movie was originally going to star Liam Neeson, an Irish actor. Daniel Day-Lewis, an English actor, has now taken the role. All great actors, but not Americans.

Clearly, I'm not trying to be xenophobic here. There just seems to be a shortage of great American actors. Look at the casting process for Captain America. The one rule they stuck to was Captain America had to be played by an American. After going through the entire cast of Gossip Girl and anyone associated with The CW, Marvel finally found/settled for Chris Evans. C'mon, America, we almost couldn't find an American to play our most patriotic superhero ... are we really unable to find an American to play our greatest president?
