BOX OFFICE REPORT (JAN. 18-20): 'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' Debuts at No. 1, Proving That America Still Loves Awful Movies

America, just when I thought you had started shunning awful movies in favor of great films like Zero Dark Thirty and Lincoln, you go and do something like helping Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters debut at No. 1 ... and totally unredeem yourself. I thought we had figured things out finally. The Last Stand? Tanked. Silver Linings Playbook? From No. 10 to No. 3 last weekend. C'mon, America, you can do better. At least you sent Movie 43 to a No. 7 opening with just $7 million.

1. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (N)
$19.00 million ($19.00 million)
By all accounts, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is an uninspired and bad movie. Not even a good bad movie, the kind that you can actually enjoy how bad it is. In an overall down weekend, $19 million was enough to win the box office, something that we'll probably be reminded off in the commercials for Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters this week.

2. Mama (1)
$12.86 million ($48.65 million)
Once again, still didn't see Mama. I'm not a horror film person, so unless Jessica Chastain herself asks me to see this movie with her, I'm not going to be able to offer any insights on it. (This is a hint, Jessica Chastain.)

3. Silver Linings Playbook (10)
$10.00 million ($69.47 million)
Silver Linings Playbook only dropped 7 percent from its previous weekend gross, an impressive feat for a film in its eleventh week of release. Of course, a good chunk of that time was spent in limited release, something that still baffles me. If Jennifer Lawrence is the favorite for the Oscar for Best Picture, why didn't Silver Linings Playbook become available to the masses earlier?

4. Zero Dark Thirty (2)
$9.80 million ($69.90 million)
Keep giving movies like Zero Dark Thirty your money, America. You really need to atone for those Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters sins.

5. Parker (N)
$7 million ($7 million)
Yikes. Was anyone even excited about Parker? Jennifer Lopez should pay someone to remind of simple things like: "The only reason people care about you again is since you're on American Idol — you probably shouldn't quit that show and try to jumpstart your acting career with shoddy movies like Parker." That person would provide a valuable service.

Next week's predictions:
1. Warm Bodies
2. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters
3. Mama
4. Silver Linings Playbook
5. Zero Dark Thirty
