'We Were Supposed to Protect Them': New 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Trailer Unites Past and Future

X-Men: Days of Future Past is one of the most ambitious superhero movies ever. Not only has director Bryan Singer united the cast of his original X-Men movies but he's added the cast of the X-Men: First Class prequel, all while tackling one of the most revered stories in the X-Men canon. With all that in mind, why does the new trailer for X-Men: Days of Future past feel anticlimactic?

Fox released the trailer on Monday morning, and while it definitely has some cool moments, it doesn't have the same impact that the X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer released in October had.  It still looks like a big deal, but that last trailer had an emotional punch, driven home by the performances of Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy as the old and young Charles Xavier. The new trailer comes across as more of a montage of cool special effects shots. And a bunch of Sentinels that look like the robot from the Keanu Reeves Day the Earth Stood Still remake. (That's never a compliment.)

X-Men: Days of Future Past stars Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lawrence, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin (maybe?), Shawn Ashmore, Peter Dinklage, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Omar Sy and Lucas Till. It opens on May 23, 2014.
