AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Scores Second-Highest Opening Weekend Ever With $191.3M

Avengers: Age of Ultron was worth but it wasn't mighty enough to topple The Avengers at the top of the all-time opening weekends rankings. The sequel grossed a whopping $191.3 million this weekend — good enough for No. 2 on those rankings behind The Avengers' $207.4 million

On the strength of the $26.7 million Avengers: Age of Ultron hauled in through Thursday and midnight showings on its way to a $84.5 million Friday (the second biggest day in box office history), it looked like the movie was going to beat its predecessor's box office record. It seems that Saturday's Kentucky Derby and big boxing fight kept moviegoers away from theaters.

The second biggest opening weekend in history isn't bad, though. Marvel Studios now owns the top three spots on the list: The Avengers ($207.4 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million) and Iron Man 3 ($174.1 million). The studio stands alone as the only one to break the $170 million opening weekend mark.

Marvel Studios parent Disney still has plenty of ammunition left to break The Avengers' opening weekend record. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will get a crack at the record this December, and Captain America: Civil War (which is basically an Avengers sequel) will put Marvel right back in the mix next May.
