BOX OFFICE REPORT (OCT. 17-19): 'Fury' Rolls to Victory

1. Fury (N)
Weekend gross: $23.5 million / Total domestic gross: $23.5 million /
Percent drop: NA
When it comes to Brad Pitt movies, Fury had a middle-of-the-road opening. It was nowhere near as big as World War Z ($66.4 million) or Mr. and Mrs. Smith ($50.3 million), but it still out-earned The Counselor ($7.8 million) and Killing Them Softly ($6.8 million). Sony probably would've been happy if Fury opened closer to the $38.1 million that Inglourious Basterds, Pitt's previous World War II movie, brought in.

2. Gone Girl (1st)
Weekend gross: $17.8 million / Total domestic gross: $107.1 million /
Percent drop: 32.6
Gone Girl became Ben Affleck's eighth film to pass the $100 million mark this past weekend, now standing as the sixth highest grossing movie of his career. Gone Girl should keep adding to this total over the next few weeks.

3. The Book of Life (N)
Weekend gross: $17 million / Total domestic gross: $17 million /
Percent drop: NA
I didn't think The Book of Life looked all that bad based on its commercials, but I was worried that its tone was too close to Pixar's upcoming Dia de los Muertos movie. The fact that The Book of Life could only muster a $17 million opening should allow Pixar to move forward without worrying about people thinking that their movie is too close to The Book of Life.

4. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (3rd)
Weekend gross: $12 million / Total domestic gross: $36.9 million /
Percent drop: 34.4
Insert "terrible, horrible, no good, very bad" pun here.

5. The Best of Me (N)
Weekend gross: $10.2 million / Total domestic gross: $10.2 million /
Percent drop: NA
The Best of Me had the worst opening weekend of the nine movies based on Nicholas Sparks movies. Looks like people would rather see James Marsden play the nice guy who doesn't get the girl.

Next week's predictions
1. John Wick
2. Fury
3. Ouija
4. Gone Girl
5. The Book of Life
