BOX OFFICE REPORT (OCT. 3-5): 'Gone Girl' Gives Ben Affleck and David Fincher a Weekend Win

1. Gone Girl (N)
Weekend gross: $38 million / Total domestic gross: $38 million /
Percent drop: NA
Holy opening weekend, Batman. Gone Girl debuted at No. 1 its opening weekend, giving star Ben Affleck his best opener since 2003's Daredevil ($40.3 million) and director David Fincher his best opener ever. Amazingly, Fincher's previous best opener was the $30.1 million brought in by Panic Room in 2002.

2. Annabelle (N)
Weekend gross: $37.2 million / Total domestic gross: $37.2 million /
Percent drop: NA
As the spinoff of The Conjuring, Annabelle performed pretty well, with its $37.2 million almost matching The Conjuring's $41.9 million. We'll get a sequel to The Conjuring in October 2015 — is there a sequel to Annabelle coming too?

3. The Equalizer (1st)
Weekend gross: $19 million / Total domestic gross: $64.5 million /
Percent drop: 44.3
Denzel Washington's latest couldn't hold off Affleck and that spooky doll. The Equalizer fell 44.3 percent in its second weekend.

4. The Boxtrolls (3rd)
Weekend gross: $12.4 million / Total domestic gross: $32.5 million /
Percent drop: 28.1
Whatever praise The Boxtrolls got from critics wasn't enough to keep the movie from struggling in its second weekend. Audiences and advertising for The Boxtrolls seem to have disappeared.

5. The Maze Runner (2nd)
Weekend gross: $12 million / Total domestic gross: $73.9 million /
Percent drop: 31.2
Kind of disappointed Dolphin Tale 2 got knocked out of the top five this weekend. I had more dolphin jokes.

Next week's predictions
1. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
2. Dracula Untold
3. Gone Girl
4. The Judge
5. Annabelle
