BOX OFFICE REPORT (NOV. 7-9): Second Disney Animation Renaissance Continues With BIG HERO 6 Victory
1. Big Hero 6 (N)
Weekend gross: $56.2 million / Total domestic gross: $56.2 million /
Percent drop: NA
The Second Disney Animation Renaissance continues. Big Hero 6 grossed $56.2 million its opening weekend, winning the frame and keeping Walt Disney Animation's streak of box office hits alive. This opening weekend ranks second best since the Second Disney Animation Renaissance kicked off with Bolt in 2008, trailing only — surprise, surprise — Frozen wide release opening weekend mark of $67.4 million.
Quality-wise, Big Hero 6 also kept up the lofty expectations of the Second Disney Animation Renaissance, clocking a 91 percent at Rotten Tomatoes. That's actually higher than any of the recent six Walt Disney Animation films.
2. Interstellar (N)
Weekend gross: $50 million / Total domestic gross: $50 million /
Percent drop: 45.2
Interstellar was never going to open to Dark Knight numbers, so how did the movie do when it comes to rest of director Christopher Nolan's portfolio? The movie's opening weekend $50 million blew away the opening marks for Insomnia ($20.9 million), The Prestige ($14.8 million) and Momento ($235,488), but couldn't beat the $62.8 million that Inception brought in when it opened in 2010. While Big Hero 6 siphoned off some of Interstellar's potential business, the less-than (Inter)stellar reviews for Nolan's latest probably kept it from reaching the heights that eventual Best Picture Oscar nominee Inception achieved.
