Good News, Bad News? NBC Renews 'Community' While ABC Cancels 'Happy Endings'
There was a time when I probably would have threatened to burn the Internet down if NBC canceled Community. After this past season, though, I had mixed feelings about whether or not I wanted the network to bring the show back. Sure, Community is better than most other comedies on TV right now, but it's nowhere near the same show it once was when Dan Harmon was running things.
On the flip side, I will passionately fight ABC over the future of Happy Endings. You know what Happy Endings' biggest challenge was? Overcoming ABC's bumbling treatment of it. Seasons aired out of order, episodes aired almost any day of the week, weird hiatuses — whatever ABC could do wrong with Happy Endings, the network did.
As the networks announced their renewals, cancelations and pickups on Friday, NBC renewed Community and ABC canceled Happy Endings. Look, I guess I'm happy that we'll get a fifth season of Community. Now that we've made it this far, a sixth season and a movie should be easy boxes to check off, right? I'm furious over ABC's cancelation of Happy Endings, though. It's just wrong. Happy Endings is (no, I won't say "was") one of the smartest, funniest and quickest comedies on TV. Far, far better than Modern Family. Yes, better than Modern Family. Manny sucks. Don't even bother arguing me on this one. In a world where Two and a Half Men gets to live forever, Happy Endings shouldn't be canceled.
Now, there's still the chance that Happy Endings could live on on USA Network. Sony has had talks with the cable channel about moving Happy Endings over there, but talks couldn't become serious until ABC had actually axed the show. Now that ABC has done that, we'll see what the future holds for Happy Endings.
