IT'S OFFICIAL: Seth Meyers to Host 'Late Night' as Jimmy Fallon Moves to 'The Tonight Show'
Popculturology called this one months ago. When rumors started swirling that NBC was getting ready to retire Jay Leno and move Jimmy Fallon to The Tonight Show, we offered the idea that Saturday Night Live head writer and Weekend Update host Seth Meyers would be the man to replace Fallon on the Late Night desk. That thought quickly became everyone's standard guess for who NBC would hire for Late Night. On Sunday, our guess became reality, when NBC announced that Meyers would be the next host of Late Night. From Entertainment Weekly:
“We think Seth is one of the brightest, most insightful comedy writers and performers of his generation,” said NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt. “His years at SNL‘s Weekend Update desk, not to mention being head writer of the show for many seasons, helped him hone a topical brand of comedy that is perfect for the Late Night franchise.”
“I only have to work for Lorne for five more years before I pay him back for the time I totaled his car,” Meyers said, “12:30 on NBC has long been incredible real estate. I hope I can do it justice.”So what happens with SNL and Weekend Update? The show will need a new head writer and Update host. Popculturology's guesses? SNL writer and Stefon mastermind John Mulaney becomes the next head writer. NBC didn't pick up Mulaney's pilot, and if the network knew Meyers would be leaving SNL, that move would make total sense. As for the Weekend Update desk, Bill Hader as a solo anchor or Bobby Moynihan and Cecily Strong as co-anchors would be a good starting guess.
