'Terminator 5' Will Launch a New Trilogy, Hit Theaters on June 26, 2015

Last Friday, Popculturology brought you a big Terminator 5 rumor and did our best to debunk it at the same time. A week later, there's actually some real Terminator news to report. On Thursday, Skydance Productions, Annapurna Productions and Paramount Pictures officially announced a rebooted Terminator movie (which they're not even calling Terminator 5) that will hit theaters on June 26, 2015.

Skydance Productions, Annapurna Pictures and Paramount Pictures have jointly announced they will partner on a rebooted “TERMINATOR” movie, to be released by Paramount Pictures on June 26, 2015. 

The first in a stand-alone trilogy, “TERMINATOR” will be produced by Megan Ellison of Annapurna and David Ellison of Skydance. Dana Goldberg and Paul Schwake of Skydance will serve as executive producers. Laeta Kalorgridis (“Avatar,” “Shutter Island”) and Patrick Lussier (“Drive Angry”) are attached to write the screenplay. 

Launched in 1984 with star Arnold Schwarzenegger as the title character, “TERMINATOR” spanned 3 subsequent films, which have earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. 

It's very interesting that the press release is referring to this movie as a "rebooted Terminator movie," not just a new movie in the current franchise. Despite people's displeasure with Terminator Salvation, McG and Christian Bale's addition to the series was always canon. Will this new movie be canon too? If it's not, does it really need Arnold Schwarzenegger? Sure, he's always been a part of the franchise, but like Zack Snyder's Man of Steel ditching John Williams' traditional Superman theme, reboots have to break ties with their predecessors somehow.

The 2015 movie year is shaping up to be one of the biggest we've seen in a long time. In addition to this new Terminator movie, we already have The Avengers 2, Star Wars: Episode VII, Jurassic Park IV, either Justice League or Man of Steel 2 and Finding Dory. Gonna be a busy movie-viewing year.
