Sony Calls Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones for GHOSTBUSTERS Reboot
The main cast of the Ghostbusters reboot has been announced, and like the original movie, its full of Saturday Night Live connections. Director Paul Feig announced on Tuesday that Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones will play the four main female characters in Ghostbusters.
No word yet on who the four will be playing, but all reports point to this movie having new characters, not just gender-swapped versions of the original Ghostbusters roster.
The casting of McCarthy is no surprise, as she and Feig have worked together on Bridesmaids, The Heat and several other movies. McCarthy and Wiig starred in Bridesmaids together. Like Wiig, McKinnon and Jones are current SNL castmembers. And on top of all that, McCarthy has hosted SNL on several occasions.
Sony Pictures released the official logo for the new Ghostbusters movie (which looks exactly the same as the old logo) and Feig announced that the movie will hit theaters on July 22, 2016.
McKinnon and Jones are interesting casting choices. While McKinnon has been a SNL rock for several seasons now and Jones is the current breakout freshman star, they're not quite the Emma Stone or Jennifer Lawrence all-star cast the Internet was hoping for. McCarthy, Wiig, McKinnon and Jones have never all worked together at the same time, there's enough overlap between their careers that should result in the chemistry a team movie like Ghostbusters requires.
