JURASSIC WORLD Continues Monster Run With $102M; INSIDE OUT Sets Own Record With $91.1M

There was never a question whether Jurassic World would hold off Inside Out at the box office this weekend, but no one predicted that Pixar Studios' latest film would come make things as close as it did.

Jurassic World had the second biggest weekend of all time, grossing $102 million. This is only the second time a film has cracked the $100 million barrier its second weekend, and trails only The Avengers' $103.1 million. Inside Out became the first Pixar movie to not open at No. 1, but had the second biggest opening ever for the studio, behind Toy Story 3's $110.3 million. Inside Out's opening weekend is the best performance ever for a film that isn't a sequel or an adaptation.

Going into the weekend, it looked like Inside Out would be far behind Jurassic World, possibly opening somewhere in the $60 million to $80 million range. Amazing reviews and a near-perfect record on Rotten Tomatoes fueled the film's box office performance.

Any story about Inside Out and this weekend's box office that makes it sound like Inside Out failed in some way by not keeping Pixar's No. 1 streak alive is just trying to dump on the studio. Inside Out was a return to form in every aspect for Pixar. For a decade, Pixar was the bright light in the animation world, leading us through Disney Animation Studios dark days and DreamWorks Animation's years of fart-based humor. Cars 2 and Brave derailed Pixar, but Inside Out restores the studio. Pixar is a box office and critical threat once again.

It's amazing that Jurassic World is still breaking records. A few weeks ago, it looked like this movie would successfully break $100 million its opening weekend. No one guessed that the latest Jurassic Park installment would be less than $20 million away from cracking $1 billion worldwide and be the quickest to that milestone in history. Jurassic World is also the quickest film to $350 million, reaching the mark in nine days compared to The Avengers ten days. The movie will crack $400 million in 11 days, beating The Avengers' record pace of 14 days.

The next few weeks should be very interesting for Jurassic World. If the film is going to challenge Avatar's all-time domestic record of $749.8 million, it's going to have to perform better than The Avengers' third-weekend drop of 46 percent. Avatar fell just 9.8 percent its third weekend, a performance that Jurassic World will find hard to match up against Ted 2.
