BOX OFFICE REPORT (APRIL 4-6): 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Sets New April Opening Record

The Avengers bump is very real. And if you're any other studio, you think twice before putting your movies anywhere near a Marvel Cinematic Universe film now. Just like Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier outperformed its predecessor, fueled by the momentum 2012's The Avengers infused into the megafranchise. The first Captain America movie opened to $65.1 million back in 2011, grossing $176.7 million during its domestic lifetime. The Winter Soldier should pass that entire gross by the end of next weekend.
Captain America: The Winter Solider also set a new record for an April opening weekend, beating the $86.2 million grossed by Fast Five in 2011.
Marvel Studios already has Captain America 3 in the works, with directors Anthony and Joe Russo returning. The sequel is rumored to have a May 6, 2016, release date, which currently pits it against Warner Bros.'s Batman/Superman movie. It sounds like Warner Bros. is going to blink and change that film's date, which is amazing. Ten years ago, the idea that a Captain America movie could scare away a Batman/Superman mashup would have been crazy.

And on the second weekend, Noah sunk. The Biblical epic plummeted 61.1 percent. Noah was in a tough spot — the movie pretty much had to all of its business during its first week, since once Captain America: The Winter Soldier opened, no one would be heading to the theaters to watch the story of the Ark.

3. Divergent (2nd)

Percent drop: 49.3
Over the past weekend, Divergent crossed the $100 million barrier. This is a nice accomplishment, but it's now clear that Divergent won't be the next Hunger Games.

4. God's Not Dead (5th)
Percent drop: 12.2
Despite dropping 12.2 percent from last weekend, God's Not Dead actually moved up a spot, coming in at No. 4 this weekend.
5. The Grand Budapest Hotel (6th)
Weekend gross: $6.3 million / Total domestic gross: $33.4 million /
Percent drop: 26.2

The Grand Budapest Hotel slid into the top five this weekend, trumping previous also-rans like Muppets Most Wanted and Mr. Peabody and Sherman.
