Jim Carrey Announces He 'Cannot Support That Level of Violence' in 'Kick-Ass 2'

Over the past few years, Jim Carrey has been known to have a bit of a liberal streak, which seems to come out whenever he falls into the trap of "actors talking about politics." Carrey created a stir when he took on the NRA in March with an anti-gun video that mocked Charlton Heston, which eventually escalated to a battle of words with Fox News.

During that ordeal, several people tried to call Carrey out on the fact that he was pushing a very anti-violence message while at the same time we were seeing his extremely violent character in trailers and commercials for Kick-Ass 2. How could Carrey reconcile those two things?

Well, on Sunday, the actor answered that question with a series of tweets railing against the violence in Kick-Ass 2 and disowning his role in the movie.

I meant to say my apologies to others involve with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.

Look, if Carrey wants to make a moral stand on this issue, that's his right. If he really had a change of heart, that's fine. Here's where it's hypocritical though — unless Carrey announces that he's refusing his paycheck for Kick-Ass 2 or donating the entire thing to charity, he's still profiting off the very violence he's trying to make a stand against. You can't have it both ways.

A few hours after Carrey went after Kick-Ass 2 on Twitter, Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar posted his feelings about the situation on his website. Head past the jump to see what Millar had to say.

Millar comes off as initially shocked that Carrey would bail on Kick-Ass 2, but then manages to defend his movie while still being respectful of the actor.

... But Carrey in particular is magnificent. He's never done anything like this before and even from the trailer, with his masked dog sidekick specially trained to munch criminal balls, you can see that something really fun and special is happening here. Colonel Stars and Stripes is so charismatic and all his scenes are up there with Nic Cage's amazing turn as Big Daddy in the original... which made it all the more surprising when Jim announced tonight that the gun-violence in Kick-Ass 2 has made him withdraw his support from the picture. ... 

... As you may know, Jim is a passionate advocate of gun-control and I respect both his politics and his opinion, but I'm baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn't in the screenplay eighteen months ago. Yes, the body-count is very high, but a movie called Kick-Ass 2 really has to do what it says on the tin. A sequel to the picture that gave us HIT-GIRL was always going to have some blood on the floor and this should have been no shock to a guy who enjoyed the first movie so much. My books are very hardcore, but the movies are adapted for a more mainstream audience and if you loved the tone of the first picture you're going to eat this up with a big, giant spoon. Like Jim, I'm horrified by real-life violence (even though I'm Scottish), but Kick-Ass 2 isn't a documentary. ...

From what Millar wrote, it sounds like Carrey's performance in Kick-Ass 2 is really something. I'm not surprised, as I've long felt that this role would be the one to reboot Carrey's career. Looks like Carrey won't be spinning a successful Kick-Ass 2 performance into a career in action films.
