Walt Disney Animation Announces New JACK AND THE BEANSTALK Movie Titled GIGANTIC

If you're like me, the definitive version of the Jack and the Beanstalk story is the one featuring Mickey Mouse. Walt Disney Animation Studios plans on changing that canon with a new movie based on the Jack and the Beanstalk tale. The studio announced plans for Gigantic at the D23 Convention over the weekend.

"We hope this will be the definitive version of Jack and the Beanstalk … with comedy and deep emotion," Gigantic director Nathan Greno said during Disney's presentation. Greno previously helmed Tangled for Disney.

From Variety:

Set in Spain during the Age of Exploration, the film follow Jack as he discovers a world of giants hidden within clouds. Jack befriends the female giant Inma, who’s “11 years old, 60 feet tall, fiery, feisty and a lot to control” and treats him like a living doll, Greno said. Meanwhile, the baddies, Storm Giants, stand at 120 feet.

Frozen songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez are on board to write the music for Gigantic. The movie is scheduled to be released on March 9, 2018.

I saw a couple movie bloggers complaining that the world didn't need another Jack and the Beanstalk movie. Sure, Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Slayer was a massive flop, but that doesn't mean Disney shouldn't be allowed to try their hand at a feature film based on the story. Anyone doubting the studio's ability to deliver right now is clearly ignoring the run the studio is on: Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen and Big Hero 6.
