BOX OFFICE REPORT (OCT 26-28): 'Argo' Wins a Weak Weekend
1. Argo (2)
$12.36 million ($60.78 million)
Well done, America. Well done. In Argo's third weekend, it finally won the box office. Of course, when a movie wins the box office in its third weekend, that's usually the sign of a weak overall box office. Argo's $12.36 million shouldn't be enough to win a weekend, but I'm glad that it worked out for Argo.
After not seeing a movie in weeks, I finally got back out to the theater this weekend, catching Argo. Ben Affleck's triumphant film has to be the Oscar favorite right now, with Affleck himself in line to bring home an Oscar for directing.
2. Hotel Transylvania (4)
$9.50 million ($130.43 million)
This movie won't die, will it? It's been in the top five for weeks now, refusing to go away. After a month, is there really anyone left out there just dying to see Hotel Transylvania?
3. Cloud Atlas (N)
$9.40 million ($9.40 million)
Sorry, Wachowski siblings, your time is over. After breaking onto the scene over a decade ago with The Matrix, the Wachowskis have squandered any opportunity they had to do something great. The Matrix itself is now horribly dated (c'mon, that pseudo-intellectual mumbo jumbo was never going to hold up), the sequels were massive disappointments, Speed Racer was a flop and now Cloud Atlas, a bloated vanity project, can't even make $10 million in its opening weekend. Time to go, Wachowskis.

4. Paranormal Activity 4 (1)
$8.68 million ($42.63 million)
I really thought Paranormal Activity 4 would hold up better during Halloween weekend. This franchise appears to be running out of steam.

5. Taken 2 (3)
$8.00 million ($117.39 million)
Compared to Taken, Taken 2 may be ahead when it comes to overall box office gross, but the sequel's weekend box office numbers are now trailing the original movie's numbers.
Next week's predictions:
1. Wreck-It Ralph
2. Flight
3. Argo
4. Cloud Atlas
5. The Man with the Iron Fists
