BOX OFFICE HERO: 'Iron Man 3' Grosses $175.3M to Score the Second Biggest Opening Weekend Ever
We'll have the full Box Office Report later, but it looks like Iron Man 3 grossed an estimated $175.3 million at the domestic box office its opening weekend. While this number wasn't good enough to top the all-time record of $207.44 set by The Avengers last summer, it's still good enough to claim the No. 2 all-time spot. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 and its $169.19 million now drops to No. 3 on that list.
After Iron Man 3 opened with $68.3 million on Friday, Deadline is reporting that the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe grossed $64 million on Saturday (only a 6 percent drop) and is estimated to drop roughly 20 percent on Sunday. Now, if Iron Man 3 holds much stronger than that on Sunday, these estimated numbers could be off by a lot. That said, Iron Man 3's $175.3 million opening weekend is much closer to the $190 million that I predicted than the $120 million that many box office analysts had been predicted before the movie opened internationally.
