Taylor Swift and Katie Holmes Join Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep in 'The Giver'
Long before The Hunger Games made it cool for kids to do summer reading projects based on books about societies that pushed death, The Giver was bumming them out with its dystopian take on the future. With a cinematic adaption of The Giver set to hit theaters next year, the movie has slowly been rounding out its cast, bringing in Jeff Bridges to play the title character, Meryl Streep as the Chief Elder, Brenton Thwaites as Jonas and Alexander Skarsgard as Jonas' father, with Philip Noyce directing.
On Thursday, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Katie Holmes has joined The Giver as Jonas' mother. We haven't seen Holmes on the big screen since 2011's Jack and Jill, the awful Adam Sandler movie where Sandler played both parts of a brother/sister duo. Sorry, I guess it's become redundant at this point to refer to Sandler movies as awful.
Following the news of Holmes' casting comes word that Taylor Swift too had signed on for The Giver. Like with the Holmes news, The Hollywood Reporter broke this story too. No word on who Swift will be playing. The singer was last seen on screen in Valentine's Day, but also voiced a character in the animated adaption of The Lorax.
The Giver is scheduled to open in theaters on Aug. 15, 2014.
