'Argo' Screenwriter Joins Ben Affleck on 'Superman vs. Batman' -- Is This Really 'Justice League'? And Will Affleck Direct?
If there's a scene in the Man of Steel sequel where Batman tells Superman to "Argo f--- himself," we'll know why. Chris Terrio, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind Argo, has been brought in by Warner Bros. to rewrite Batman vs. Superman, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Terrio joins Argo director and star Ben Affleck on the film, with Affleck on board to play Batman.
It's been a busy few weeks for Batman vs. Superman. In addition to this Terrio news, Gal Gadot was cast as Wonder Woman, and there have been reports that Warner Bros. is eyeing Joaquin Phoenix and Jason Momoa to play villains, with Phoenix likely being offered the role of Lex Luthor.
All of these moves lead me to two theories. The first is that based on the addition of Wonder Woman to Superman and Batman along with the fact that the studio has yet to officially announce the movie's title, we're actually seeing the Justice League movie come together. Sure, it completely blows up any plan to slowly work up to a Justice League movie, but Warner Bros. needs to catch up to Marvel and its Cinematic Universe and it needs to catch up quick.
My second theory is that we shouldn't be surprised when the announcement comes that Zack Snyder will slide over to an executive producer role with Affleck assuming the director spot. I'm supposed to believe that with the Oscar-winning combo of Affleck and Terrio in place, Warner Bros. is going to keep Snyder on as director? Man of Steel made money and kickstarted the franchise, but Affleck is a prestige director now. You don't keep him on the sidelines, especially if this movie winds up being Justice League.
Whatever this movie winds up being called, it's due to hit theaters on July 17, 2015. There's still plenty of time to shuffle directors and maybe add a Flash cameo.
