BOX OFFICE REPORT (JUNE 27-29): Did 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' Actually Break the $100M Barrier?

1. Transformers: Age of Extinction (N)
Weekend gross: $100 million / Total domestic gross: $100 million /
Percent drop: NA
Transformers: Age of Extinction became the first 2014 movie to break the $100 million barrier during its opening weekend ... or was it? Despite Paramount Pictures reporting that the latest installment of Michael Bay's Transformers series made exactly $100,038,390, a lot of industry analysts are saying that the studio has inflated the movie's opening weekend number in order to claim the victory of being the year's first $100 million opener.

"Looking at Rentrak, at this time, the average for the three-days is $22.964M, representing a total gross for three days of $97.76M," one distribution executive told Yahoo. "Rentrak collected 97 percent of the grosses for the three days. In my humble opinion, it would be impossible for $100M to be reported."

Providing Age of Extinction's weekend gross sticks, it'll be the second-highest opening for the franchise, trailing Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's $108.97 million debut in 2009. Based on the movie's supposed true opening weekend number, though, Age of Extinction will also trail Transformers: Dark of the Moon's $97.85 million too.

2. 22 Jump Street (2nd)
Weekend gross: $15.8 million / Total domestic gross: $140.3 million /
Percent drop: 42.3
Thanks to 22 Jump Street's $15.8 million weekend, the sequel has now passed 21 Jump Street's lifetime domestic gross of $138.4 million. The movie still has a ways to go to become directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord's highest grossing film, as The Lego Movie racked up $257 million during its time in theaters.

3. How to Train Your Dragon 2 (3rd)
Weekend gross: $13.2 million / Total domestic gross: $122 million /
Percent drop: 46.4
How to Train Your Dragon 2 continues to disappoint at the box office. Through its first three weekends, the original How to Train Your Dragon had grossed $133.4 million. I'm a bit baffled that despite stellar reviews, How to Train Your Dragon 2 has lagged behind its predecessor. Prior to Transformers: Age of Extinction, there really wasn't a family movie in theaters. (That said, I'll also argue that Age of Extinction isn't at all a family movie.)

4. Think Like a Man Too (1st)
Weekend gross: $10.3 million / Total domestic gross: $48 million /
Percent drop: 64.7
Yikes — what happened to Think Like a Man Too? After opening at No. 1 last weekend, Kevin Hart's latest film plummeted 64.7 percent, falling to No. 4. The movie's overall domestic gross of $48 million trails Think Like a Man's gross at the same point by roughly $12 million.

5. Maleficent (5th)
Weekend gross: $8.4 million / Total domestic gross: $202 million /
Percent drop: 35.1
Maleficent became Angelina Jolie's highest grossing live-action film last weekend and followed up that feat this weekend by inching closer to becoming the actress' all-time highest grossing film. That title is still held by Kung Fu Panda 2, thanks to that movie's $215.4 million.

Next week's predictions
1. Transformers: Age of Extinction
2. Tammy
3. Deliver Us From Evil
4. 22 Jump Street
5. Earth to Echo
