It's Official: Eddie Redmayne Cast as Newt Scamander in FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

Eddie Redmayne has been the rumored favorite to lead Fantastic Beasts and Where the Find Them for months. On Monday, Warner Bros. finally made his casting in the Harry Potter prequel official.

"Eddie is a fearless actor, brimming with invention, wit and humanity," director David Yates said in a statement. "I couldn't be more excited about the prospect of working with him as we start this new adventure in JK Rowling's wonderful world, and I know she feels the same way."

The first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie will hit theaters on Nov. 18, 2016, and kick off what Warner Bros. plans to be a trilogy of movies set decades before the Harry Potter movies. Here's what the studio has to say about the movie:

Redmayne will play J.K. Rowling’s creation Newt Scamander, the Wizarding World’s preeminent magizoologist, who in his travels has encountered and documented a myriad of magical creatures, ultimately leading to his penning the Hogwarts School textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

With Redmayne in place, Warner Bros., Yates and Rowling can get to work filling out the rest of Fantastic Beasts' cast. There was a report last week that Kate Upton, Dakota Fanning and Saoirse Ronan were in the running for the two female leads in the movie.
