Fox Confirms Superhero Crossover With 'Universe United' Pic Featuring X-MEN, DEADPOOL, GAMBIT and FANTASTIC FOUR
While Marvel Studios has the unrivaled Marvel Cinematic Universe and Warner Bros. is getting its DC Extended Universe off the ground, Fox has been quietly pulling together the various Marvel licenses it holds into a cinematic universe of its own.
There have been rumors for several years now that Fox intends to crossover its rebooted Fantastic Four franchise with its expansive X-Men films. We got confirmation that this rumor was becoming a reality on Wednesday, with the Twitter accounts for these franchise tweeting out a picture of the casts of X-Men: Apocalypse, Fantastic Four, Deadpool, Gambit and Hugh Jackman himself together. The message: A universe united.
Entertainment Weekly revealed a bit more on Wednesday afternoon. "Fox held the rights to these other individual Marvel characters, beginning 15 years ago with the original X-Men film," EW wrote, "and the studio is beginning to reboot some — but not all — of them. How much each of these films will be linked together has yet to be determined."
As Fox puts its cinematic universe together, the studio already has Fantastic Four (Aug. 7), Deadpool (Feb. 12, 2016), X-Men Apocalypse (May 27, 2016), Gambit (Oct. 7, 2016), a Wolverine sequel (March 3, 2017) and a Fantastic Four sequel (June 9, 2017) on the calendar. There are also unscheduled X-Force and New Mutants movies in the works. While there could always be some cross pollination between these films to sow the seeds of a megafranchise, Fox would need a few big event films to establish this universe as its own thing. Perhaps a visit from Galactus would be enough to rally the Fantastic Four and X-Men to the same cause?
