Chiwetel Ejiofor Will Play DOCTOR STRANGE Villain Baron Mordo

Doctor Strange has added another Oscar nominee to its cast. Deadline reported on Thursday that Chiwetel Ejiofor was joining the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie as Baron Mordo.

The character has been a villain in the comics since 1963, frequently facing off against Doctor Strange. Mordo and Stephen Strange were both students of the Ancient One, but Mordo turned against his mentor.

Marvel Studios continues to make exciting casting moves with Doctor Strange. While the studio picked classic white dude Benedict Cumberbatch to play the title character, it looks like Tilda Swinton will play the Ancient One, a character that is traditional a white guy in the comics. Ejiofor playing Baron Mordo, another white character, would continue to inject diversity into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ejiofor was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor due to his performance in 12 Years a Slave. This isn't the actor's first brush with playing a franchise villain. Ejiofor was also rumored to be in the running to play the villain in Spectre, the next James Bond movie. That role never came to fruition.

Doctor Strange is slated to hit theaters on Nov. 4, 2016.
