Fox Swaps Release Dates for 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' and 'X-Men: Days of Future Past,' Announces 'Independence Day' Sequel

20th Century Fox did some calendar updating on Thursday, announcing that it was swapping the release dates for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Director Matt Reeves' sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes will now premiere on July 18, 2014, and director Bryan Singer's X-Men mashup will hit theaters on May 23, 2014.

No word was given on why the swap was made, but the changes do fit previous trends. May has long been a prime month for comic book movies, with The Avengers, Iron Man and previous Spider-Man movies all debuted during the month. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a late summer movie in 2011.

In addition to those moves, the studio officially put a sequel to Independence Day on the schedule, penciling in Independence Day 2 for July 3, 2015. The studio did not say if Will Smith would be back for this installment. Let's hope everyone has learned to not include Jaden Smith, though.
