TRAILER: Who's Ready for a Gritty 'Power Rangers' Reboot? Well, 'Pacific Rim' Is as Close as You'll Get

Well, I guess Guillermo del Toro beat me to my long-simmering idea of a gritty Power Rangers reboot. While I would've called it Power Rangers in Iraq (it would have been totally topical back in 2007), del Toro is calling his version Pacific Rim, and instead of large alien creatures being sent to Earth from the moon by Rita Repulsa or Lord Zedd, the heroes in Pacific Rim fight large alien creatures that have come to earth through a dimensional portal deep under the Pacific Ocean. The giant robots controlled by heroes in protective suits part still remains.

OK, so I'm kidding about Pacific Rim being a Power Rangers reboot. Despite a few similarities, Pacific Rim looks much more badass than Power Rangers ever was. Directed by del Toro, Pacific Rim is the story of an Earth that has been overrun with giant monsters called Kaiju. Seriously, we're talking bigger than Godzilla here. As our last resort, humans have built equally giant robots called Jaegers, which are controlled by a brainlink of some kind.

Pacific Rim stars Sons of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam, Luther's Idris Elba, Babel's Rinko Kikuchi and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Charlie Day. Yes, Charlie Day — he's breaking into action movies, apparently. The film hits theaters on July 12, 2013. You can check out the first trailer for Pacific Rim after the jump.
