Spidey Snags 'Entertainment Weekly' Cover, 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Will Set Up 'Sinister Six'

Not content with just sitting back and watching Marvel Studios print money thanks to its Avengers cinematic universe, Sony has put into motion plans to create a Spider-Man Cinematic Universe, with the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as the launching point. The studio has been discussing this project for several months now, revealing that two more Amazing sequels and Venom and Sinister Six spinoffs are in the works.

On Wednesday, Entertainment Weekly revealed that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the focus of this week's cover, with Andrew Garfield (allegedly — who knows who's under that mask) and Emma Stone being featured. In a blurb released by EW, Sony Pictures Co-Chairman Amy Paschal says, "At the tail end of this movie we set up some of the other characters that will probably end up being in the Sinister Six. ... We’re going forward on all fronts."

While EW then goes on to try to figure out which villains will make up the Sinister Six roster, the magazine fails to ask how these sequels and spinoffs are going to work if Garfield and director Marc Webb are gone. The story that Sony is trying to tell here obviously isn't going to be wrapped up in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which is unfortunate because that's when Garfield and Webb are stepping away.

Hopefully EW will have more on this story when the new issue hits stands on Friday.
