'This Will Be My Last One': Hugh Jackman Says He's Done With Wolverine After Next Movie

Hugh Jackman is serious about hanging up Wolverine's claws after the character's next solo movie. Jackman first alluded to this in March when he posted a photo of those claws with the caption "one last time." In an interview on The Dr. Oz Show last week, Jackman reiterated that he was done with Wolverine.

"This will be my last one," Jackman told The Dr. Oz Show (via Newsarama). "It is my last time. It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let's be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I'm so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it."

The third solo Wolverine movie is set to hit theaters on March 3, 2017. The Wolverine director James Mangold is returning to helm it.

So what will Fox do after Jackman retires from playing Wolverine? He's been playing the character since 2000's X-Men, and besides Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, there really isn't an actor more associated with a superhero than Jackman with Wolverine. There was a rumor going around last month that Fox was planning on rebooting its X-Men universe after next year's X-Men: Apocalypse, but that rumor just doesn't make sense with how the studio is building out its young X-Men cast.

Odds are Fox will recast Wolverine after Jackman leaves the role, allowing the franchise to continue with future X-Men movies, including Gambit and Deadpool.
