BOX OFFICE REPORT (JUNE 13-15): '22 Jump Street' Torches 'How to Train Your Dragon 2'

1. 22 Jump Street (N)
Weekend gross: $60 million / Total domestic gross: $60 million /
Percent drop: NA
There's a piece about Channing Tatum in the most recent issue of GQ, and in that piece, a story about Tatum, Jonah Hill and the directors of 21 Jump Street trying to guess what that movie's opening weekend gross would be. Tatum went rogue and guessed that 21 Jump Street would make $35 million, a number much higher than anyone could imagine. 21 Jump Street wound up opening with $36.3 million and went on to gross $138.4 million.

I bet Tatum never imagined that the sequel to 21 Jump Street would almost double his original $35 million opening weekend guess.

2. How to Train Your Dragon 2 (N)
Weekend gross: $50 million / Total domestic gross: $50 million /
Percent drop: NA
While 22 Jump Street massively improved on the opening weekend gross of its predecessor, How to Train Your Dragon 2 did meagerly better than the first How to Train Your Dragon. When that movie opened in 2010, it pulled in $43.7 million over the course of its first weekend. Obviously a $50 million opening weekend isn't a bad thing, but I'm sure DreamWorks Animation had hoped How to Train Your Dragon 2 could make more than a roughly $7 million jump over the original.

3. Maleficent (2nd)
Weekend gross: $19 million / Total domestic gross: $163.5 million /
Percent drop: 44.6
Now in its third weekend, Maleficent held strong, pulling in $19 million to inflate its domestic total to $163.5 million. Maleficent is now roughly $23 million away from passing Mr. and Mrs. Smith as Angelina Jolie's top live-action grosser.

4. Edge of Tomorrow (3rd)
Weekend gross: $16.2 million / Total domestic gross: $56.6 million /
Percent drop: 44.8
For a movie that didn't really do major box office action its opening weekend, Edge of Tomorrow appears to have some staying power. After opening at No. 3, Tom Cruise's latest only slipped one place. On top of that, Edge of Tomorrow has been performing much better overseas, bringing in $181 million internationally.

5. The Fault in Our Stars (1st)
Weekend gross: $15.7 million / Total domestic gross: $81.7 million /
Percent drop: 67.2
The Fault in Our Stars may have been last weekend's big success story, but in its second weekend, the film plummeted 67.2 percent and came in at No. 5. What happened here? Did everyone who was brave enough to cry in public go to the theater during The Fault in Our Stars' opening weekend?

Next week's predictions
1. Think Like a Man Too
2. 22 Jump Street
3. How to Train Your Dragon 2
4. Jersey Boys
5. Maleficent
