THE LEGO MOVIE Directors Will Helm a Han Solo STAR WARS Spinoff Movie

Han Solo once warned Luke Skywalker to not get cocky. If you're Phil Lord and Chris Miller, though, it's hard to not be cocky. After scoring massive hits with The Lego Movie and the Jump Street movies, the directors will now direct a Star Wars spinoff movie focusing on a young Han Solo. The film will hit theaters on May 25, 2018.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on Tuesday afternoon, revealing that the Han Solo film isn't the movie that director Josh Trank left a few months ago. Lucasfilm confirmed the news shortly after, revealing that the movie "focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley."

"We're so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe," Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan said in a statement. "They're two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy."

The Han Solo Star Wars standalone movie will be the third in the Star Wars Anthology series that Star Wars: Rogue One will launch next year. The second Anthology movie, the one that Trank was originally going to direct, was originally slated for 2018 and is rumored to focus on Boba Fett. With Star Wars: Han Solo coming in 2018, that spinoff has likely been pushed back.

"This is the first film we've worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with" Lord and Miller said in a statement. "We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you're late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you've loved since before you can remember having dreams at all."

After THR's report came out, Entertainment Weekly writer Anthony Breznican hinted that Lucasfilm wanted to focus on non-Han Solos subjects for the first two Anthology movies. "Heard Solo got bumped back so it didn't crowd the new trilogy and people could get used to the idea of standalones," he tweeted.

So who plays the young Han Solo? While we've seen two actors play Obi-Wan Kenobi, casting a new actor to portray Han Solo will be the biggest change Star Wars has seen. If Chris Pratt was in the running to follow in Harrison Ford's footsteps for Indiana Jones, could Disney just decide to capitalize on Pratt's hot streak by sliding him into the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon?
