NBC Passes on Rainn Wilson's 'The Farm' Spinoff, Graciously Putting an End to 'The Office'
With The Office wrapping up after its ninth season, NBC had plans in motion for a Dwight Schrute spinoff. The show, called The Farm, would've focused on Rainn Wilson's Dwight going back to his family farm to help out his family. Not the family that we've all met through The Office, but a new and zany version of his family. Kind of like when Frasier left Cheers and had a different family. Whatever suits the plot. Well, don't make any plans to visit The Farm now. NBC has passed on the series, according to a Hollywood Reporter report.
The network has opted to pass on its Rainn Wilson-focused Office spinoff The Farm.
The project, which will air as a back-door pilot of The Office this season, centers on Dwight (Wilson) as a beet farmer running a bed and breakfast inn. Traditionally, back-door pilots run as a test-run to help determine if the project will move ahead. In this case, NBC made the decision before the episode even aired.
"Farm Update: NBC has passed on moving forward with The Farm TV show. Had a blast making the pilot - onwards & upwards!" Wilson tweeted Monday.Good. I loved The Office, and I hated to see what's happened to it the past few seasons. The show's gotten better in Season 9, but that doesn't mean I have any interest in seeing The Farm. The Dwight character has grown absurd over the past few seasons, and Wilson is one of the most piously pretentious actors around. I stopped following him on Twitter years ago after I couldn't take his Soul Pancake holier-than-thou act anymore. There's a reason his movie career hasn't taken off, and I'm not surprised that NBC passed on the idea of basing an entire show around him.
