First Full TERMINATOR: GENISYS Trailer and Poster Reset the Rules

The first trailer for Terminator: Genisys debuted on Thursday. Despite earlier signs that the film could be trouble, this trailer actually does a pretty solid job of garnering excitement for the upcoming sequel/reboot.



In Terminator: Genisys, John Connor once again sends Kyle Reese back into time to protect his mother, Sarah, from a Terminator sent to kill her before the future savior of mankind could be born. In this timeline, however, Sarah has been raised and protected by a Terminator of her own, upsetting the entire world that Kyle thought he was traveling back to.

The trailer is very efficient at setting up that conceit, replicating scenes from the original Terminator with Jai Courtney's version of Kyle Reese, Emilia Clarke's version of Sarah Connor and a face-off between the current Arnold Schwarzenegger and a CGI model of the Arnold from the first Terminator movie.

Despite revealing much of the new cast, including Jason Clarke as John Connor, the new Terminator: Genisys trailer is completely devoid of Matt Smith. Even in Entertainment Weekly's cover story on the movie, Smith's role was kept under wraps. Looks like that trend will continue for awhile.

When those EW pics came out, Terminator: Genisys was trashed on Twitter and on pop culture websites. Rightfully so — those images were awful. At the time, I pointed out that perhaps the movie was just suffering from a really poor photoshoot. Yes, those shots of the Clarkes, Courntey and Smith pretending to shoot giant guns were shoddy. There's a chance Terminator: Genisys won't be.

Terminator: Genisys opens on July 1, 2015. The movie stars Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Courtney, Smith, Lee Byung-hun and JK Simmons.
