Marisa Tomei Joins SPIDER-MAN Reboot as Aunt May

The Spider-Man reboot has its Spider-Man and its director, and now the film has its Aunt May. Marisa Tomei is in talks to join Marvel Studios and Sony's upcoming movie, according to Variety.

Tomei will join Tom Holland, who was announced as the new Peter Parker/Spider-Man in June. Jon Watts will direct what Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said will be a film that embodies the spirit of a John Hughes movie.

The untitled Spider-Man reboot is set to hit theaters on July 28, 2017, but The Hollywood Reporter thinks we could see Tomei as Aunt May in next year's Captain America: Civil War. Unless something has dramatically changed, that's also when Holland's tenure as Spider-Man will kick off.

Tomei's casting continues the cinematic departure from the elderly version of Aunt May we once saw in the comic books. Rosemary Harris, the actress who portrayed the character in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, turned 75 the year the first Spider-Man movie opened. Sally Field turned 66 the year The Amazing Spider-Man hit theaters. When the Spider-Man reboot debuts in 2017, Tomei will turn 53. I guess when you don't have a 40-year-old Tobey Maguire playing Peter Parker, you don't have to go elderly with Aunt May.
